Two Bad Boy Fighters Take the Stage at UFC 109

On February 6, Bad Boy has two fighters competing on the UFC 109 main card. Bad Boy fighter, Demian Maia, will face off against Dan Miller in a battle of middleweights, while another Bad Boy fighter, Paulo Thiago, will fight against fellow welterweight Mike ‘Quick’ Swick. With credentials like a two time World Champion, 2006 Pan American Champion, 2007 Super Challenge under-83kgs (182 lbs.) Champion, and 2007 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion, Maia has been widely regarded as possibly the best jiu-jitsu practicioner the UFC has. Maia has won Submission of the Night four out of six of the nights he has fought for the UFC. Out of his eleven wins, eight have been by submission, and six of those came in the first round. So needless to say, he is extremely dangerous on the ground. </p> <p> Dan Miller (11-2-0) is an up and coming middleweight in the division with a 3-1 record in the UFC. He has a background in wrestling, which he has done since he was a little kid, and he has used that to help strengthen his jiu-jitsu. Out of Miller’s eleven wins, six have been by submission. Before coming to the UFC, Dan Miller had actually become the IFL’s Middleweight Champion. After his first loss in the UFC, you can expect him to be looking for any way to start his climb back to the title, this time in the UFC.</p> </p> <p> This won’t be a fight that stays standing. Look for Maia to try and set up take downs with his striking. While I think Miller will try to keep the fight standing, but he will be surprised at how much Maia’s striking has improved and will get tagged with a few good hits. Miller will keep this fight standing, maybe trying to mix in a few take downs, but the ground is not a place that you want to be on with Maia. </p> <p> This is going to be an excellent fight. Both fighters are submission artists, and it should be a great display of grappling skills. This will be Paulo Thiago’s third fight against a middleweight top contender from the American Kickboxing Academy. His first match in the UFC was against the Josh Koscheck, a member of American Kickboxing Academy, and he won via technical knockout. His next fight was against Koscheck’s teammate, Jon Fitch. He lost that match-up by a decision. After rebounding from that loss, Thiago was slated to have a rematch with Koscheck, but he was forced to withdraw, and in stepped his teammate Swick. </p> <p> Mike ‘Quick’ Swick will be looking to rebound from his first loss as a welterweight. In Swick’s last fight, he was outstruck by Dan Hardy, who is not the number one contender for the welterweight title. Had Swick won, he would be fighting for the championship, so he obviously has some skills. Swick earned his nickname by finishing off his first four UFC opponents in the first round. He is a very good striker, but he has shown weakness on the ground, as he has been out wrestled by a couple opponents. </p> <p> Thiago’s game plan will probably be to set up his take downs with some striking that has improved every fight he has had. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is second hand nature to him, and he also showed his improved wrestling in his fight with Jacob Volkmann, a three time NCAA Division 1 All-American wrestler. </p> <p> This is going to be a great fight. It will be the classic battle of Striker (Swick) vs. Grappler (Thiago).
