Even though this was most likely Miller’s game plan from the start, Maia was definitely the more aggressive of the two fighters, as he landed solid punches and left very few openings for any counter strikes. They exchanged punches throughout the first round, but both fighters seemed cautious to really let their fists fly, as they were wary of counter strikes. The second round started the same as the first round ended, until Swick landed a solid right that moved Thiago backwards. Swick rushed in and was met with two punch combo that ended with a left hook, which sent Swick to the ground. Champion, and 2007 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion, Maia has been widely regarded as possibly the best jiu-jitsu practicioner the UFC has. Maia has won Submission of the Night four out of six of the nights he has fought for the UFC. Out of his eleven wins, eight have been by submission, and six of those came in the first round. So needless to say, he is extremely dangerous on the ground. </p> <p> Dan Miller (11-2-0) is an up and coming middleweight in the division with a 3-1 record in the UFC. He has a background in wrestling, which he has done since he was a little kid, and he has used that to help strengthen his jiu-jitsu. Out of Miller’s eleven wins, six have been by submission. Before coming to the UFC, Dan Miller had actually become the IFL’s Middleweight Champion. After his first loss in the UFC, you can expect him to be looking for any way to start his climb back to the title, this time in the UFC.</p> </p> <p> This won’t be a fight that stays standing. Look for Maia to try and set up take downs with his striking. While I think Miller will try to keep the fight standing, but he will be surprised at how much Maia’s striking has improved and will get tagged with a few good hits. Miller will keep this fight standing, maybe trying to mix in a few take downs, but the ground is not a place that you want to be on with Maia. </p> <p> This is going to be an excellent fight. Both fighters are submission artists, and it should be a great display of grappling skills. He lost that match-up by a decision. After rebounding from that loss, Thiago was slated to have a rematch with Koscheck, but he was forced to withdraw, and in stepped his teammate Swick. </p> <p> Mike ‘Quick’ Swick will be looking to rebound from his first loss as a welterweight. In Swick’s last fight, he was outstruck by Dan Hardy, who is not the number one contender for the welterweight title. Had Swick won, he would be fighting for the championship, so he obviously has some skills. Swick earned his nickname by finishing off his first four UFC opponents in the first round. He is a very good striker, but he has shown weakness on the ground, as he has been out wrestled by a couple opponents. </p> <p> Thiago’s game plan will probably be to set up his take downs with some striking that has improved every fight he has had. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is second hand nature to him, and he also showed his improved wrestling in his fight with Jacob Volkmann, a three time NCAA Division 1 All-American wrestler. </p> <p> This is going to be a great fight. It will be the classic battle of Striker (Swick) vs. Grappler (Thiago). Instead the fight was getting called in little more than two minutes.</p> <p>Cigano took little damage in the fight, as he only received one punch that had good connection early in the first round. That punch seemed to wake dos Santos up, as he then began to control the fight with ease. While stalking Yvel around the octagon, you could tell it was only a matter of time before the much quicker puncher, dos Santos, would attack. </p> </p> <p>When dos Santos finally struck, he unleashed a flurry of punches where most of them connected. Yvel answered back with a flurry of his own, but most of his punches landed unsuccessfully. After that, dos Santos landed a kick and a nice right before taking a punch. After backing off for a few seconds, Cigano landed a counter left hook that dropped Yvel to the ground. Once he hit the floor, Junior unleashed some relentless bombs to the head, forcing referee Herb Dean to call the fight. </p> <p> Before the fight, Dana White said, “If Junior dos Santos goes in there and knocks this guy out, he’s there. He’s ready for that title shot.” While dos Santos may not get his shot at the title for now, he is definitely in the mix for the top contender spot. Most of the fight, it seemed like the fighters were in a different class, but despite the gap in class that night, Diego still went after Penn as hard as he could.</p> <p> Diego fans knew it was going to be a long night as soon as B.J. knocked him down with a straight right in the opening minute of the first round. While on the ground, B.J. unleashed relentless fists that fans thought would get the fight called. but, Sanchez rolled out of it and avoided a few punches that could have dropped him. </p> <p> The next three rounds were a little more competitive, as Diego looked to take the fight to the ground, but never succeeded. Starting off his MMA career at a perfect 12-0, Diego didn’t make his UFC debut until he was chosen as a participant on The Ultimate Fighter, which he won as a middleweight. After the show, Diego dropped to welterweight, his hard hands, wrestling skills and unquestioned amount of stamina got him five more wins until losing to top contenders Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck. He made his lightweight debut against Joe ‘Daddy’ Stevenson and won by unanimous decision. He would later go on to beat Clay Guida by split decision, which is up for Fight of the Year, before getting the chance at the lightweight belt.</p> <p> Diego certainly won’t have an easy time with this match, as he faces a man that hasn’t been beat at 155 lbs. for almost eight years. While defeating people that had been training jiu jitsu their entire lives, Penn became the first non-brazilian to win the black-belt division of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, after only three years of training in jiu jitsu.
