‘Varner Makes His Return Against Interim Champ Henderson’ On January 10, Revgear fighter and WEC Lightweight Champion, Jamie’C-4′ Varner makes his return, from almost a year out of the cage, against WEC Lightweight Interim Champion Ben ‘Smooth’ Henderson. At the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California, reigning champion, Varner will look to destroy Henderson and become the undisputed champion. Varner has been out of action for almost a year after a battle with Donald Cerrone. Varner was caught with an illegal knee to the right side of his face when he was on the ground. After the fight, it was found out that Varner had sustained a broken hand and foot, and a detached retina from the knee to his face, which could have ended his career. But, Varner got a second opinion, and it was later found out to be a strained retina. Varner (16-2-0 with 2 no contests) started his career in 2003 with a 1-1 record and has since gone 15-1 with the two no contests. He had a short stint durng this time in the UFC, where he received his other loss. However, after the UFC, he joined WEC and has since gone 4-0, including the fight that put him out for almost a year. Varner is a product of Arizona Combat Sports, where he practices his boxing and wrestling skills. He is a very well rounded fighter with 5 victories by (T)KO, and 9 by submission. Henderson (10-1-0) started his career off the same way as Varner and has since gone 9-0. He even beat none other than Donald Cerrone, for the interim title, by unanimous decision. Henderson is also a very well rounded fighter, with 2 (T)KOs and 6 submissions. Henderson is known for his relentless take downs, great cardio, and insane submission defense. In his fight with Cerrone, he escaped from seven different submission attempts, a couple of which would have had most fighters tapping out. This is going to be a great fight, as both fighters have similar styles and can take the fight anywhere. Both fighters wrestling skills will probably cancel each other out from doing much on the ground, so look for most of this fight to be standing. Because of this I have to give the fight to Varner, as his striking game is his strongest area. Varner will do everything he can to keep Henderson from getting his hands on the title, and after almost a year of no fighting, he has to be hungry for the finish. However, I think this fight will go the distance, as Varner take it by split-decision. |
