At the age of 15, Rua started his Muay Thai training at the world renowned Chute Box Academy. Rua’s started his professional career at Vale Tudo events in Brazil then later moved to the Pride Fighting Championship. After beating huge names like Quinton Jackson, Shogun’s popularity grew. Coincidentally the UFC bought out Pride which allowed Shogun to sign on with the UFC. He made his first UFC debut at UFC 76 fighting the Ultimate Fighter Season 1 winner, Forrest Griffin. Shogun inevitably lost in the second round to a rear naked choke. Some blame Shogun’s bad knee for the loss, which he had surgery on after the fight. After the epic loss to Forrest Griffin, Rua came back with force, dominating MMA stars Mark Coleman and the former Lightheavy weight Champion, Chuck Liddel. In the first round the fight looked as if it would be a close match with both fighters landing equal amount of strikes. Round two and three were the same with Machida and Shogun working their techniques and scoring the same amount of strikes. During round four, Shogun takes charge and shows that he is there to win, with superb striking, he controlled the rest of the match. Although Rua obviously won, the judges ruled a win by decision to Machida and is welcomed by boo’s from the crowd. Controversy arose with the decision and was criticized by notable MMA fighters such as Quinton Jackson, Randy Couture, Jon Jones, and Rashad Evans. When asked what he thought about the results of the fight, Dana White, the UFC President stated that he too believed that Shogun had been robbed of the title. Due to the controversy surrounding the decision, a rematch is scheduled to take place at UFC 113 on May 8, 2010, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
