Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua At the age of 15, Rua started his Muay Thai training at the world renowned Chute Box Academy. Rua’s started his professional career at Vale Tudo events in Brazil then later moved to the Pride Fighting Championship. After beating huge names like Quinton Jackson, Shogun’s popularity grew. Coincidentally the UFC bought out Pride which allowed Shogun to sign on with the UFC. He made his first UFC debut at UFC 76 fighting the Ultimate Fighter Season 1 winner, Forrest Griffin. Shogun inevitably lost in the second round to a rear naked choke. Some blame Shogun’s bad knee for the loss, which he had surgery on after the fight. After the epic loss to Forrest Griffin, Rua came back with force, dominating MMA stars Mark Coleman and the former Lightheavy weight Champion, Chuck Liddel. His next match would be considered one of the most controversial matches in UFC history and is still talked about to this day.
